Oak Alley Plantation, Louisiana
Oak Alley Plantation is dedicated to preserving and sharing the full scope of its history. During my tour, I appreciated their efforts to shed light on the experiences of the enslaved individuals who once called Oak Alley home.
The plantation was established in the early 19th century by Jacques Telesphore Roman, a wealthy Creole sugar planter. It’s centerpiece, the "Big House," was completed in 1839 and is a prime example of Greek Revival architecture.
The plantation relied heavily on slave labor to cultivate and harvest sugar cane, as this was their primary source of income.
I was particularly captivated by the slave quarters and spent most of my time photographing that area. You will see the wind in several of the photos blow the old and weathered curtains.
My goal was to wait and capture a captivating composition as I felt they would add a spiritual and authentic quality to the story of these quarters.
